Travel and flyfishing in the Russian Far East
Urak River
In clear water of the river dwell big Arctic grayling.
Urak is a big river, flowing into the Sea of Okhotsk 20 km to the west from the Okhotsk village. Urak joins its biggest tributary, Ketanda, on the distance of 83 km from the sea. Our trip starts at this confluence and ends at the mouth of Urak.
In all rivers of the Okhotsk area there are numerous Salmonid fish: Pacific salmon (silver, chum, sockeye and pink), Dolly Varden charr, white-spotted charr, and trophy Arctic grayling, which is often bigger than 1 kg.
In most stretches Urak is shallow, has many channels and flows in wide valley on pebble bottom. On the first day of the trip the group comes to serious falls. It is possible to float the falls or to portage boat and gear around it. As a whole, floating does not present difficulties.
