Travel and flyfishing in the Russian Far East 

 

Taimen about 20 kg was caught in the Tugur River at the twilight with "articulated streamer" - a sculpin imitation .

To get such a trophy you do not necessarily need heavy gear and big treble hooks.

        Artificial flies - part 3

[17]  Bomber - coho, trout, lenok, grayling, taimen, charr  

There is no need to make detailed description of this popular fly. This is one of the patterns I use very often. Big Bombers imitate mice, smaller versions - adult caddisflies or stoneflies. I tie Bombers in different colors (black, red, brown, grey, white) and in different sizes - from # 2 to # 14.

[18] Skating caddis * -  grayling, lenok, Dolly Varden charr

 

This simple fly can work as both classic dry and skater. Tied in different sizes and colors, it could imitate wide variety of caddisflies, stoneflies and mayflies.

 

Hook - # 14-8.

Thread - black.

Tailsquirrel tail guard fibers.

Body  - gray, brown or olive dubbing.

Wings - a bunch of stiff hair, tied behind the head of the fly - for its middle part.

Legs  - rooster hackle.

[19] Lenkovka (Lenok Fly) * grayling, lenok, charr, trout

 

This is one of the most universal surface flies. This simple pattern is a variant of Foam Skater and is similar to some other fly patterns.

 

Hook - # 16 - 1/0

Thread - black, red or clear mono.  

Tail - rooster hackle fibers or stiff fur.

Back - red or black Dry Foam.

Body - Dry Foam.

Legs - palmered red or black rooster hackle.

[20]  Verkhovka * skygazer, yellowcheek, Mongolian redfin , lookup

 

This fly is a white variant of "Lenkovka" and was invented for the surface-feeding predators of the Amur River. This is one of "dry streamers" - surface baitfish imitations.

 

Hook - # 12 - 2

Thread - clear mono.  

Tail - white synthetic fibers and pear Flashabou (Crystal Flash).

Back - white Dry Foam.

Body - white, yellow or pearl Ice Chenille.

Legs - white synthetic fibers and pear Flashabou.

Throat - red Ice Chenille.

[21] Smolt *Dolly Varden charr, trout, cherry salmon, white-spotted charr

 

Hook - # 4-8, or # 8-10 double, long shank.

Thread - clear mono.  

Tail - flank teal feather.

Body - silver tinsel, with pearl Flashabou on top of it.

Rib - blue Flashabou.

Wings - white and blue fibers with one Grizzly hackle on each side.

Overwing - some strands of pearl Flashabou .

Throat - flank teal feather.

Head20-30 turns of light-blue Flashabou.

Eye - painted.

[22] Surface Fry *  -  charr, trout

 

Hook - # 6-10.

Threadblack.

Tail - teal flank or grizzly hen feather.

Bodypearl mylar tubing on top of underbody of Dry Foam. On the sides I  have black parr marks.

Throat - teal flank or grizzly hen feather.

[23] Yama Streamer *  -  Pacific salmon, charr, trophy grayling

 

This simple fantasy pattern is one of the best streamers in rivers of the Sea of Okhotsk

 

Hook - # 2-8

Thread - black.

Tail - bright red and orange soft feather or down.

Body - silver mylar tubing or tinsel.

Underwing - orange or red marabou feather.

Wing - 2 white gull feathers (with down), white marabou feather, or white ostrich plume.

Throat - crimson or orange feather.
